Easter Meditation (April 2025)
The Christian Church celebrates The Resurrection of Christ as a cardinal doctrine of its faith. The resurrection of Christ on the first day of the week so impacted the Early Church that they moved their time for worship from Saturday, the last day of the week as is the custom of the Jews, to the first day of the week in celebration of Christ’s resurrection.
The resurrection was the very life pulse of the Early Church. Paul gives us a synopsis of the importance of the resurrection in 1 Corinthians 15:3-4, “…that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,…” Twice in these verses the apostle reminds us that the resurrection was in harmony with the teaching of the Scriptures. You and I need to be reminded that these Holy Scriptures to which Paul refers are the Old Testament books. On the day of His resurrection, Jesus joined two disheartened disciples returning from Jerusalem. As they told this stranger why they had lost hope, Jesus said to them: “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.” [Luke 24:25-27]. Paul is only following the pattern of Jesus in substantiating the resurrection of Jesus as having been prophetically declared by Old Testament Scriptures.
But the veracity of the resurrection did not depend solely on Old Testament Scripture. Paul declares that there were witnesses who could bear testimony to having seen Jesus after His resurrection. In verses 5 he testifies, “…he(Christ) appeared to Cephas/Simon Peter, and then to the Twelve.”. It is apparent that Jesus made a special effort to see Peter before He met with the other disciples. Mark tells us that the angel whom the women encountered at the empty tomb were given a message for the disciples, “…go tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.’ ” [Mk. 16:7].
The angel’s message to the women was to be sure and tell Peter. This indicates that the message came straight from Jesus Himself. Peter and Jesus had issues to be resolved. And this fact is corroborated by Luke again when the Emmaus’ disciples return to Jerusalem to tell the other disciples that Jesus was alive, they were informed, “It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.” [Luke 24:34]. The testimony of Simon that Jesus had appeared to him personally was the crucial evidence that turned the scales in the hearts and minds of the first disciples.
Then, as a footnote, Paul testifies that Jesus appeared to him also, “and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.” [v.8]. Paul’s conversion was an ‘untimely birth’. Paul’s encounter with Jesus came after He had returned to heaven. It was nothing short of a supernatural appearance of the risen Christ to a man driven to persecute and eradicate the church of Jesus.
Has the Easter truth of Christ’s resurrection become a truth in your heart and life. You can have the same witness and assurance as Peter or Paul. Search the scriptures and allow the Holy Spirit to impart His witness to your heart. Then you will be able to say, “It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to me.”
