Operation Christmas Child 2021

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who participated in packing or building gift shoeboxes online. Online, we purchased 92 shoebox gifts through the Build a Shoebox Online Goal Page! We individually packed 19 for a grand total of 111 shoeboxes! Multiplied out, as many as 444 children may be impacted by these gifts.

Locally, the Southern Arizona Team collected 9983 shoeboxes through 3 locations. We collected 238 shoeboxes at the St. John’s Drop-Off Location: Great turnout for our first year as a Drop-Off!

We had an amazing Drop-Off Team! We had 18 volunteers, 16 from St John’s UMC! When we weren’t busy counting shoeboxes, we prayed, read  devotionals and  stories from Franklin Graham’s book, “Operation Christmas Child, a Story of Simple Gifts.”  We also had great Christian fellowship! Our volunteers put in over 400 volunteer hours in 8 days!
Our volunteers were: Elsa Cocoa, Donna Durant, Sioux Espinoza, Leticia Garcia, from Calvary Chapel West Campus, Elaine Gokey, John & Nancy Gregory, Loretta Hanson, Alan & Kathleen Hayes, Linda Johnson, from The Evangelical Free Church of Green Valley, Daniella Mendoza, Ronda Redmon, Joe & Jackie Riegert, Jackie Treadwell and Bob & Mary Jo Gaines, Team Leaders. Over the weekend, Alex and Taylor joined us! Good to start them when they’re young!

We thank all our volunteers!
Without volunteers, this ministry wouldn’t be possible.

Until next year, we remain faithfully yours,
Bob & Mary Jo Gaines

Rummage Sale

Rummage Room is open from 8am – noon on the first and third Saturday each month.  Each donated item is carefully looked at to ensure it is worth selling.  If it is dirty, we clean it.  If it is repairable, we fix it.  And if it is not, we throw it away or put it on the free table.

For example, we have a rare, handcrafted clock made from a selection of burls and special woods salvaged from the rugged coastal areas of British Columbia by Boogie Beach Boxes, a company founded in 1987 in Courtenay, BC, which is located midway up, on the eastern side of Vancouver Island, Canada.  The Boogie Beach Boxes company claims that their products are a lasting reminder of the natural beauty found in British Columbia’s rain forests.  Looking at this exquisite clock, one would have to agree!   We have this clock priced at $65.00 … but if you would like a pay more, your St. John’s UMC Rummage Sale Committee, would be happy to accept your generous offer.  Furthermore, this Clock would look lovely on your mantle or shelf, or it would make a memorable gift, or a wonderful addition to your clock collection.  This treasure is just one more example of the great deals that can be yours, from our Rummage Rooms.
Don’t forget Springtime is budding all around us, so check out our garden and gardening items, flower vases, and traveling bags; maybe we have the items you’re looking for?  Need an extra suitcase or some traveling bags to hold those needed items on that trip, we just might have what you need.  Come see for yourself!

Nomads - 2022

St. John’s United Methodist Church welcomed a team of NOMADS who worked at St. John’s UMC from January 3 to January 21, 2022. The team leaders were Jim and Linda Tyas from Missouri. Jim and Linda were at St. John’s three years ago and were happy they were able to return. The full team of five couples were all ready to begin work early on Monday, January 3.
The NOMADS began in 1988 with 24 members completing five projects in Texas and Oklahoma.  Currently they offer about 175 projects each year and have over 900 active members. NOMADS stand for “Nomads On a Mission Active in Divine Service”. They provide volunteer labor for United Methodist organizations. They do new construction, remodeling and repairs in churches, church camps, children’s homes and other related ministries. Many bring skills of the highest order to the projects they work on.
The pictures included in the gallery below depict some of the projects the Nomads worked on this year.
There were several areas of concentration this year, including new carpet in the Arnold Room and fresh paint and new carpet in the church office.
In addition, the Nomads worked on several paint projects; interior and exterior and widening and replacement of the door to the ladies restroom making it handicap accessible.
St. John’s Trustees Committee, under the leadership of Eric Giffin, lined up the projects for this year’s NOMADS.
St. John’s UMC has been richly blessed by the love and labors of  NOMADS over the past years, and with this year’s team, St. John’s continued to be blessed.
God Bless the NOMADS!
